About Quincy, Massachusetts

Quincy is a city of 101,636 people in Norfolk County, on Quincy Bay just south of Boston. In 1625 Captain Richard Wollaston's party set up a trading post on a low hill at a place the Native people called Passonagessit, and they called the spot Mount Wollaston. Before long Wollaston departed for Virginia, and Thomas Morton took charge and renamed it Ma-re-Mount, until Myles Standish arrested him in 1627 and he was shipped back to England.

The land later passed to Dorchester and, in 1640, to the new town of Braintree, whose North Precinct was set off in 1708. John Adams was born there in 1735, and his son John Quincy Adams was born in the house next door in 1767. John Hancock was born there too. In 1792 the precinct broke away as the town of Quincy, named for Col. John Quincy, Abigail Adams's grandfather, and it became a city in 1888.

“No ship could come in without being seen from thence.”
History of Norfolk County, 1884
  • A stone church from Adams's quarriesIn 1822 John Adams gave the town granite quarries for a stone temple. It rose so near the old church that the tower had to come down. John Spear bought it at auction in March 1828 for seventy dollars.
  • The Granite Railway of 1826Builders of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown needed Quincy stone, so in 1826 the Granite Railway was built to carry it from a quarry down to the Neponset River at Milton, where it was loaded onto boats for the rest of the trip. Quincy granite grew famous across the nation, and by the 1890s 140 Quincy firms were making granite monuments.
  • Ships from the Fore RiverQuincy built ships before its big yard: the Massachusetts, said to be the nation's largest ship, was built at Germantown in 1789. In the 1880s Thomas A. Watson, made rich as Alexander Graham Bell's telephone assistant, founded the Fore River yard. It built the battleships USS Massachusetts and USS Nevada and the carrier USS Lexington, and in 1917 it put up a Shingle-style clubhouse for its workers.
  • Watching the British fleetCol. Josiah Quincy built his country house above Quincy Bay in 1770, and during the Revolution he kept an eye on the British warships in Boston Harbor through its attic windows. In 1778 John Adams left for France from Houghs Neck instead of Boston, to slip past the British.
  • Flag Day parade since 1952Richard Koch, who once directed the city's parks and recreation department and founded the Koch Club, a sports program for children, started a yearly parade with flags in 1952. It has grown into the longest-running Flag Day parade in the United States.
