About Ravensdale, Washington
The town's first name was Leary. It came from a coal company named for Seattle pioneer John Leary. The name Ravensdale came later, from flocks of ravens that ate grain spilled from Northern Pacific boxcars.
On December 17, 1975, Palmer Coking Coal Company sealed the Rogers No. 3 mine shut with dynamite. It was the last underground coal mine in Washington. Coal mining had carried the town's economy for decades before then.
