About Stratford, Connecticut

Stratford is a town of 52,355 people in Fairfield County, where the Housatonic River meets Long Island Sound. Puritans led by the Reverend Adam Blakeman and William Beardsley settled here in 1639, and that year the General Court in Hartford called the place the "new plantation at Pequannock." The name Cupheag, a Paugussett word for a place of shelter, was in use by 1640, and on April 13, 1643, the town took the name Stratford, for Stratford-upon-Avon.

Blakeman led both the church and the town until he died in 1665. Some founding families believed the town lost its religious purity after his death, so in 1666 they left and founded Newark, New Jersey. Connecticut's first Anglican church gathered in Stratford in 1707. Later, Stratford's own lands broke away into new towns: Huntington, now Shelton, in 1789, Trumbull in 1797 and Bridgeport, partly carved from Fairfield, in 1821.

“It is a beautiful place, and from the water has an appearance not inferior to that of Canterbury.”
Samuel Peters, 1781
  • The Stratford KnockingsIn 1850, coming home from church on a Sunday, Dr. Phelps's family found crape hung on their door and a shrouded figure laid out inside. Rapping and thumping filled the house on Elm Street for eight months or more, and people said bricks, pokers and flat-irons flew about. Ministers who came to stop it left puzzled. Crowds arrived by every train, and the village hackman ran a big yellow omnibus with a sign reading Mysterious Stratford Knockings.
  • Three mullein stalksIn the War of 1812, with a British warship anchored offshore, a sergeant and sixteen men guarded the point. One dark, windy night the sergeant saw movement and told his men to scatter, but daylight showed the enemy was three mullein stalks. A lighthouse followed in 1822; its cast-iron tower of 1881, among the country's first prefabricated cylindrical lighthouses, joined the National Register in 1990.
  • The first helicopter flightIgor Sikorsky picked Stratford for his aircraft plant in 1929. On September 14, 1939, at age 50, he sat in the open cockpit of his experimental VS-300 in his overcoat and fedora, and the machine, held by cables, rose about three feet for about ten seconds. It flew free on May 13, 1940, and its single main rotor with a tail rotor became the world's standard design. Stratford has built every Marine One since 1957.
  • 7,829 CorsairsThe Vought-Sikorsky plant in Stratford turned out 7,829 F4U fighters between 1940 and 1952, prototype included. They saw heavy combat across the Pacific in World War II and backed up forces in the Korean War, and a Corsair on a pedestal at the airport honors that war effort.
  • Nine generations of JudsonsCaptain David Judson built his Academy Hill house in 1723 on the stone foundation his great-grandfather William had laid in 1638, and he kept the old chimney. Judsons lived there for nine generations, until 1888. The Stratford Historical Society now runs it as a museum, and the house joined the National Register in 1973.
