About Oronoque, Connecticut
Oronoque is a community of 3,790 people in the northern part of Stratford, in Fairfield County. The Housatonic River runs along its eastern side, Shelton lies to the north, and the Merritt Parkway marks its southern edge.
In May 1727 Thomas Gilbert of Oronoque petitioned the Court for the right to start a ferry here, about four miles upriver from the Stratford ferry. The Court granted it, so passengers could cross what the record called the Oronoque River, and it fixed his fare at the same rate charged at Stratford.
- A preacher past a hundredThe Reverend Nathan Birdsey, who studied at Yale, became minister at West Haven in 1743 and served there for 16 years. He then came home to the estate his family owned at Oronoque and spent the rest of his life there. After he turned a hundred he still preached from the Stratford pulpit, and he died on January 28, 1818, at 103. His funeral drew roughly a hundred of his descendants.
- Born here in 1780Gideon Tomlinson, whose birthplace was Oronoque, arrived on December 31, 1780, and finished Yale in 1802. He sat in the state legislature and in Congress, became Governor of Connecticut in 1827, and served as a United States Senator from 1831 to 1837. He died on October 8, 1854.
- Sikorsky by the riverSikorsky Aircraft keeps its administrative offices in the eastern part of Oronoque, on the land between Main Street, Route 110, and the Housatonic River.
