About Loyola, California
Loyola is a census-designated place of 3,491 people in Santa Clara County, set in wooded hills between Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. Its name reaches back to 1904, when the Jesuits of Santa Clara University drew up plans for a second university here and meant to name it for their founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Santa Clara, which went by the name University of Santa Clara in those years, bought 650 acres close to the spot now called Loyola Corners for the new campus. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake brought long delays and money troubles, and the university was never built. The name Loyola stayed with the land anyway, and the neighborhood that grew up there still carries it.
- Named for a Jesuit founderIgnatius of Loyola was a Spanish saint who founded the Society of Jesus, the order better known as the Jesuits. Santa Clara's Jesuits chose his name for the university they hoped to open in these hills. When the plan fell apart after the earthquake, the name remained on the proposed campus site and passed to the community around it.
- Fairways where classrooms were plannedHad the 1904 plan gone forward, the new university would have stood on the ground now taken up by the Los Altos Golf & Country Club, off Country Club Drive. Instead of lecture halls, the club's course became the centerpiece of Loyola's woodsy streets.
- From cottages to mansionsLoyola has been ranked among the wealthiest neighborhoods in America. Its homes run from small cottages to sprawling ranch houses and large mansions, all within 1.4 square miles of land.
