About Nellis AFB, Nevada

Nellis AFB is a community of 4,379 people in Clark County, Nevada, near North Las Vegas. In January 1941 the City of Las Vegas bought Western Air Express Field and split it in two. One half became McCarran Field, the city's airport. The Army leased the other half and started building there that March.

Las Vegas Army Airfield opened on December 20, 1941, and gunnery classes began the next month. At the height of the war the field graduated 600 gunnery students and 215 co-pilots every five weeks, and its population peaked at nearly 11,000 officers and enlisted men, more than 4,700 of them students. Training stopped in September 1945, and the field closed in 1946. It reopened under the new Air Force, became Las Vegas Air Force Base in 1948 and took the name Nellis in 1950.

“Many pieces of the destroyed aerial drone targets litter the hillside north of the gunnery range, and can be seen in town when the sun reflects off them.”

  • Named for a local pilotFirst Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis lived in Las Vegas and flew P-47 fighters in World War II. He was killed in Belgium in 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. The Air Force gave the base his name in 1950, and his family attended the dedication on May 20 of that year.
  • 45,000 B-17 gunnersMore than 45,000 B-17 gunners trained here during the war, firing from B-17s, B-24s and B-40 gunships at targets towed behind other planes. The Army Air Forces filmed its training movie The Rear Gunner at the field in 1943, and in March 1945 the school switched to training gunners for the B-29.
  • Thunderbirds since 1956The Air Force's Thunderbirds demonstration squadron moved to Nellis from Arizona in June 1956. In February 1974 the team was assigned to the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing, which had been activated at the base in 1969.
  • Red Flag began in 1976A study after the Vietnam War found that young pilots died most often in their first 10 combat missions. Nellis responded in 1976 by creating Red Flag, exercises built to let pilots fly those first 10 missions under combat-like conditions in training. The base still hosts Red Flag today.
