About Noroton Heights, Connecticut

Noroton Heights is a village of 3,116 people in the town of Darien, on Connecticut's Gold Coast, with Stamford along its western edge. During the Civil War the merchant Benjamin Fitch built Fitch's Home for Soldiers and Orphans here, a place people also called the Noroton Home. It was dedicated on July 4, 1864, and it stayed in use until 1940.

  • Benjamin Fitch, 1802 to 1883Benjamin Fitch became a millionaire as a merchant, running a chain of dry goods stores. He spent part of that fortune on a home in Noroton Heights for children whose fathers had died serving in the war. Its buildings stood near where Noroton Avenue meets West Avenue and remained there until after World War II.
  • A home for veterans until 1940The state took control of the home in 1887 and gave it the name Fitch's Home for Soldiers. Many of Connecticut's Civil War veterans received care there, along with men who had served in the Spanish American War and in the First World War. The home served them until the state opened a new Veterans Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill on August 28, 1940.
