About Stamford, Connecticut

Stamford is a city of 135,470 people in Fairfield County, on Long Island Sound. The Siwanoy called the land along the river Rippowam. In 1640 Captain Nathaniel Turner of the New Haven Colony bargained with the sagamores Ponus and Wascussee for it, offering 12 each of coats, hoes, hatchets, knives and glasses, plus 4 fathoms of white wampum. The Reverend Richard Denton led 29 families down from Wethersfield in 1641, and in 1642 the settlers renamed their village for Stamford in Lincolnshire, England.

For generations Stamford stayed a quiet Puritan village. Around 1829 a trip to New York still meant riding a stagecoach as far as Saw-Pitts, the place now called Port Chester, before boarding a rough steamer that Cornelius Vanderbilt ran. That year William Henry Holly founded the Advocate, the town's first newspaper. In December 1848 the first train arrived, and frightened animals ran across the fields while people hurried to the depot. New Canaan and Darien split off in 1801 and 1820, and Stamford, a borough since 1830, became a city in 1893.

“With the throbbing and busy city, Stamford itself began to wake from its Rip Van Winkle slumber.”
History of Fairfield County, 1881
  • The Lock CityIn 1868 the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company left Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, for Stamford. It continued the work Linus Yale Jr. had begun in Philadelphia. About thirty workers opened the plant. By 1880 it had 250 and turned out bank locks, post office fittings and over three hundred kinds of locks, earning Stamford its nickname. Nearby, the H. W. Collender billiard table factory filled five stories on four acres, and an 1881 county history ranked it first in the nation.
  • A strike that stopped downtownFrom late 1945 into April 1946, more than 3,000 workers walked out at the Yale and Towne lock factory, then the city's largest employer. On January 3, 1946, the union called a day of action that drew about 10,000 people, set off sympathy strikes in nearby towns and brought downtown Stamford to a halt. Professor George Lipsitz later called it the nation's first general strike in twelve years.
  • The oldest house, from 1699Samuel Hoyt, a blacksmith, began this house around 1699, before he married, and it is the oldest in Stamford. In 2016 it was taken apart, carried five miles from its Bedford Street lot and rebuilt beside the Stamford History Center, where visitors can tour it. The Hoyt-Barnum House joined the National Register in 1969.
  • A lighthouse the Herald wonIn 1880, after the Stamford Herald pressed for it, Congress set aside seven thousand dollars for a light off the harbor. A cast iron tower made in Boston went up on Chatham Rock in 1882, about 3,600 feet out. Keepers lived in it with their families until it passed to a private owner in 1955, and the Stamford Harbor Lighthouse joined the National Register in 1991.
  • The Fish ChurchWallace K. Harrison designed the First Presbyterian Church on Bedford Street, dedicated in March 1958. Seen from above or from the side it takes the shape of a fish, an early Christian symbol, and more than 20,000 pieces of faceted glass light its sanctuary. Its 260-foot Maguire Memorial Tower holds 56 bells, and in 2021 the church became a National Historic Landmark.
