About Cos Cob, Connecticut

Cos Cob is a neighborhood of 6,873 people in the town of Greenwich, set on the western shore where the Mianus River empties out. The Coe family settled here in 1641, and Robert Coe raised a shoreline wall, called a cob, to guard land he had given his brother. People called the spot Coe's Cob, and over time the name wore down to Cos Cob.

The sheltered harbor on Long Island Sound made the village a shipping port, sending potatoes and apples to New York City. On Christmas Day, 1848, workers laid the final rails over the Cos Cob Bridge, closing the last gap in the line from New Haven to New York. Trains and a dam on the Mianus later ended the port trade, and for two years, from 1883 to 1885, the post office went by the name Bayport.

“The general impression among them seemed to be, that the first train that attempted to cross this pass would also be the last.”
Wikipedia
  • Impressionism by the riverThe Holley family came to Cos Cob in 1882, rented an old colonial saltbox with fourteen rooms and began taking in summer guests. Starting in 1890, the painter John Henry Twachtman brought his Art Students League pupils there each summer and taught them the Impressionist methods he had picked up near Paris. The Cos Cob Art Colony grew from those classes, and the Greenwich Art Society carries on its work.
  • A street of sea captainsBefore trains reached Greenwich in 1848, most of the town's trade passed through two river landings, the lower one at Cos Cob and the upper one at Mianus. By the Civil War, a captain owned every one of the three houses on Mead Avenue. One was Robert Clark, master of four packet boats that hauled farm produce. The street is now part of the River Road--Mead Avenue Historic District.
  • Seton and the Boy ScoutsErnest Thompson Seton lived on an estate in Cos Cob, and the work he did here helped found what became the Boy Scouts of America. His land is now a town park.
  • The bridge collapse of 1983On June 28, 1983, a 100-foot elevated span of Interstate 95, the Mianus River Bridge, fell, killing and injuring several drivers. The highway did not fully reopen for six months, and the bottleneck slowed traffic along the corridor between New York and Boston.
