About Old Greenwich, Connecticut

Old Greenwich is a coastal village of 6,962 people in the town of Greenwich, Fairfield County, on Long Island Sound. Robert Feake and Daniel Patrick, who had been neighbors in Watertown, Massachusetts, bought land here from the Munsee people on July 18, 1640. The Munsee agreed to let the two men settle it in return for 25 coats or bolts of cloth, and the town still keeps July 18 as its Founders Day.

Elizabeth Fones Feake, a niece and daughter-in-law of Massachusetts Bay governor John Winthrop, made a purchase of her own. She bought the neck the Munsee called Monakewego, which people then knew as Elizabeth's Neck, later as Tod's Point and finally as Greenwich Point. In 1944 the Town of Greenwich bought the peninsula and opened it as a preserve, park and beach for the public.

  • Why it was Sound BeachAround 1875 the railroad agreed, reluctantly, to stop here, and residents paid to build, furnish and run the station. Because a stop to the west already carried the Greenwich name and the railroad disliked look-alike names, it called this one Sound Beach. The village used that name through the 19th century, and Sound Beach Avenue is still its main street. The station, built in 1894, became Old Greenwich in 1932 and joined the National Register in 1989.
  • A house from 1688The Ferris House on Shore Road, also called the Elizabeth Winthrop Feake House, still has its original post and beam frame. Scientists at Lamont-Doherty studied the growth rings in its timbers and dated the house to 1688 or 1689, which makes it older than any other building in Greenwich by several decades.
  • Vogue printed hereFrom 1924 to 1964, Condé Nast ran a printing plant in Old Greenwich that turned out Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden and other magazines. In the 1950s and 1960s Electrolux also built vacuum cleaners at a factory on Forest Avenue.
