About Greenwich, Connecticut
Greenwich is a town of 63,518 people in Fairfield County, in the far southwest corner of Connecticut. On July 18, 1640, Daniel Patrick and Robert Feake came ashore at Greenwich Point and bought land from the Siwanoy for 25 coats. One of the founders, Elizabeth Fones Winthrop Feake, bought the point itself, so it was long known as Elizabeth's Neck. The General Assembly made Greenwich a township on May 11, 1665.
The village at the center took the name Horseneck from a strip of land along the Sound where settlers grazed their horses. The last stretch of track between New Haven and New York crossed the Cos Cob Bridge on Christmas Day 1848. In 1854 Horseneck became the Borough of Greenwich, though Greenwich Avenue still had only three or four small stores. Mianus and Cos Cob remained the business centers until after 1886, when the borough finally pulled ahead.
“This parish is the largest, richest, and most populous part of the town.”
- Putnam's ride in 1779A 1911 town history says one ball passed through his hat, and that the stone steps shown as his route were cut by the town in 1902. On August 20, 1824, Lafayette walked down that hill beneath an arch of hemlock and roses. Knapp Tavern stands nearby, and the town seal shows the ride.
- Spike iron and hoopskirt wireIn 1829 Robert Cox, an English ironworker, set up a rolling mill beside the Mianus. During the Civil War its spike iron climbed from $60 to $200 a ton. Just below it, a wire mill turned out hoopskirt wire from 1859 to 1868, then shut down when the fashion faded. Upriver, Walter Swan had made linen paper fine enough for ledgers since about 1800.
- Selleck's gristmill of 1796Sylvanus Selleck built his gristmill on Converse Pond Brook in northern Greenwich in 1796, and it ground grain until 1895. The braced-frame building is one of just two mill buildings from the 18th century known in the state. It joined the National Register in 1990.
- Oysters at the MianusIn 1850 Captain Henry S. Lockwood began raising oysters by laying down shells where the Mianus River empties out. In 1878 he launched a steamboat built for oystering, the first of its kind in the country. Boats were built at Cos Cob too, and Palmer and Duff's shipyard there did not close until 1907, when its two partners were 88 and 83.
- Ward's CastleWilliam E. Ward finished his house on the New York line in 1876. He built it entirely of reinforced concrete so that it could not burn. Known as Ward's Castle, it is often described as the country's first building of its kind. The William E. Ward House joined the National Register in 1976.
