About Pemberwick, Connecticut

Pemberwick is a neighborhood of 3,899 people on the west side of Greenwich, in Fairfield County. It lies between Glenville to the north and Byram to the south, with Port Chester, New York, along its western edge, and the Byram River flows south through the middle of it.

In 1701 Greenwich received a deed to a large piece of Native American land along its western edge, the last big one that nobody disputed. Surveyors laid the tract out in woodland lots, and those lots started here in Pemberwick, north of the road that is now West Putnam Avenue.

  • Named for Pemberwog BrookPemberwick takes its name from Pemberwog Brook, the stream's original Native American name. The brook feeds the Byram River, which runs through the neighborhood.
  • Lots drawn by lotteryA Munsee man named Waspahin witnessed the 1701 deed. Once the woodland lots had been surveyed, the town held a lottery that split them among 78 proprietors, and Pemberwick was where those lots began.
