About Riverside, Connecticut

Riverside is a section of the town of Greenwich in Fairfield County, and the 2020 census counted 8,843 people there. It sits on the east bank of the Mianus River, across from Cos Cob and central Greenwich, and it is one of three Greenwich neighborhoods with a postal name and ZIP code of its own.

In colonial days the area went by the Landing, and its farmers sent their goods out by boat from the top of Cos Cob harbor. The neighborhood is now called Riverside, and it has its own stop on the Metro-North line, where an old iron bridge carries Riverside Avenue over the tracks.

  • The Ferris farm, about 1760Samuel Ferris built a modest Cape farmhouse about 1760 on a farm of roughly 30 acres at the Landing, then farmed there for the rest of his life. His family held the place for nearly two centuries, until Mabel Louise Olmstead sold it to the Town of Greenwich in 1947. Veterans' housing went up on the farmland, but the house was spared on its own acre, and it joined the National Register in 1989.
  • A Sunday school in 1875Saint Paul's Church grew out of a Sunday school that first met on October 24, 1875, at the house of Mrs. Stephen P. Selleck. Five teachers and fifteen pupils came that day, and eleven months later it had 173 pupils and 23 teachers. H. Hudson Holly donated the plans for a chapel, which opened in December 1876, and Luke A. Lockwood, the Sunday school's superintendent, led its services until July 10, 1886.
  • A bridge moved from StratfordIn 1871 the Keystone Bridge Company built a six-span, double-track railroad bridge over the Housatonic River at Stratford. After that bridge was replaced in 1884, one span was set up again at the Riverside station in 1894 or 1895, where it carries Riverside Avenue over the tracks. It may be the last cast-iron Whipple truss variant still standing, and it joined the National Register in 1977.
