About Rock Ridge, Connecticut
Charles D. Lanier was the son of the poet Sidney Lanier. He published the American Monthly Review of Reviews. Lanier bought some thirty acres of rough, hard to reach farmland here. Swift development followed, and the place became the charming community of Rock Ridge.
Rosemary Hall, a boarding school for young ladies, came here from Wallingford. It bought six acres at Rock Ridge in December 1899 and built a school and gymnasium. They opened on October 31, 1900. Caroline Ruutz-Rees, Ph.D., led the school as head-mistress.
- An unusual school in the woodsCharles D. Lanier founded a nature school here, the Little School in the Woods. Its pupils were named for woods animals, such as chipmunks, woodchucks and foxes. A quarrel among parents later split it. Director Bernard Sexton, called Chief Grizzly, moved some pupils to the nearby Ernest Thompson Seton estate. The rest stayed and called theirs the Lanier School.
