About Byram, Connecticut

Byram is a neighborhood of 4,493 people in the town of Greenwich, in Fairfield County. It is the southernmost point of both Greenwich and the state of Connecticut, and the Byram River separates it from Port Chester, New York.

The neighborhood answered to many names before it settled on one. People called it Lyonsville, Meadsville and New Lebanon, it was known as Hawthorne in 1892, and by 1905 it went by East Port Chester. In 1947 Greenwich's Representative Town Meeting ended the confusion by voting to make Byram the neighborhood's official name.

  • Quarries opened in 1840William and Thomas Ritch opened Byram's first quarries in 1840, on the ground where Byram Park is today. Granite from Byram Quarry ended up in the Brooklyn Bridge, in St. Roch Church and in the Statue of Liberty's base. The quarry has since closed.
  • New Lebanon School, 1893Milo Mead once owned nearly all of the land from today's Byram Park to the Byram River. He gave the school district a lot for a new school on the condition that it would always carry the name New Lebanon, and the cornerstone went down in 1893. People said Mead had hoped the whole town would take that name, but he had to be content with the school.
