About Glenville, Connecticut

Glenville is a neighborhood of 2,762 people in the town of Greenwich, in Fairfield County. It grew up at the falls of the Byram River, where falling water powered a grist mill built in 1718. The small hamlet that formed around that mill was known as Sherwood's Bridge.

In 1829 Samuel G. and George Cornell of Brooklyn bought the mill and its buildings. Samuel Cornell turned the hamlet into a real village, and he may also have given it the name Glenville, which showed up in print as early as 1848. In 2007 the old village center joined the National Register as the Glenville Historic District, covering 33.9 acres.

  • America's first woven feltOver the years the Glenville mills turned more and more to making felt. They produced the first woven felt made in the United States, a material that until then had come only from Europe.
  • Lights and phones in 1881The New Mill went up in 1881, and with it came the area's first telephone system and its first electric lights. The New Mill and Depot Building, Hawthorne Woolen Mill, holds its own listing on the National Register.
  • American Felt's biggest plantIn 1899 the American Felt Company bought the Glenville mills. The four largest felt makers in the country had joined to form the company, and Glenville became its largest plant. That made American Felt the biggest felt maker in the nation, and possibly in the world.
  • Irish, then PolishThe mill village was one of the main places where newcomers to Greenwich first settled. In the 19th century most of them came from Ireland, and in the 20th most came from Poland. Glenville is still the center of Greenwich's Polish community.
