About North Berwick, Maine

North Berwick is a town of 4,978 people in York County, Maine, on the Great Works River. The land was once part of Kittery and was called Kittery Commons. John Morrell, a Quaker, became its first settler in 1693 when he put up a log cabin on Wells Street. In 1713 the area became part of Berwick, a town named for Berwick-upon-Tweed on the border between England and Scotland.

Doughty Falls on the river powered a sawmill, a gristmill and a carding mill, and the small mill town grew quickly after the Revolutionary War. South Berwick had already left Berwick in 1814, and on March 22, 1831, this part was incorporated as North Berwick. The Portland, Saco & Portsmouth Railroad reached town in 1842, and the Boston & Maine joined it in 1873, so North Berwick became a railroad hub for shipping its goods.

  • Woolen blankets since 1834In 1834 the Maine Legislature chartered Lang, Hill & Company to weave woolen printing blankets in a mill beside the Great Works River. The firm became the North Berwick Company, and by 1850 its main owner was "Friend" William Hill, who had learned the machinist's trade in Somersworth, New Hampshire.
  • Blankets for the Civil WarFire destroyed the company's wooden mill in 1861. The owners rebuilt it in brick in 1862, and it made blankets for soldiers in the Civil War. Its 40 looms also wove 1,500 yards of flannel a day. The company closed in 1955.
  • A mill in the moviesThe brick Greek Revival mill stood in for the Parrish Shoes factory in the 1995 film Jumanji. It has since been turned into housing, and the North Berwick Woolen Mill is listed on the National Register.
  • A plow from 1835William Hussey, a local farmer, designed a cast iron plow in 1835, and the Hussey Plow Company grew from it to make farm tools. As the Hussey Manufacturing Company it later turned out ladders, manhole covers, sewer grates, chair lifts and ski jumps. Today the Hussey Seating Company builds auditorium seats and stadium bleachers, and in 2003 it received recognition as Maine's oldest family-owned business. The Hussey Plow Company Building is on the National Register.
  • Goods by the boxcarOnce the railroads arrived, North Berwick loaded boxcars with lumber, shingles, bricks, carriages, caskets, clocks, toboggans and sleds it had made. Farmers and workers added barrels of apples, ice cut from frozen ponds, granite from local quarries and tins of corn from a canning factory.
