About Oakville, Connecticut

Oakville is a village of 9,504 people in the southeastern part of Watertown, in Litchfield County. It holds more than twice as many people as Watertown's center village, which makes it the largest community in the town. Steele Brook, a stream that feeds the Naugatuck River, runs through Oakville, and a dam in the middle of the village holds back Pin Shop Pond. That water powered Oakville's mills for more than two centuries, from a gristmill in 1729 to one of the country's leading pin factories.

  • A gristmill in 1729The earliest known mill to use Oakville's water power was a gristmill, which James Williams built in 1729. More than a century later, the same water privilege became the home of the village's biggest factory.
  • Paper clips from 1852A group of brass and metal companies from the area formed the Oakville Company in 1852 and took over the old mill site on Main Street. Members of Waterbury's Scovill and Leavenworth families were among its founders, and the plant turned out garment hardware, paper clips and other fasteners.
  • One of the Big FourScovill bought the business in December 1923, and the plant became the Oakville Division of Scovill. By 1950 it was counted among the four biggest pin makers in the United States. It grew into Oakville's largest company, often with more than 2,000 men and women at work there.
