About Simsbury Center, Connecticut
Simsbury Center is the central village of the town of Simsbury, 11 miles northwest of Hartford, and the 2020 census counted 6,268 people here. The Farmington River runs north just east of the village, and the old core of Simsbury Center is listed on the National Register as the Simsbury Center Historic District.
Until 1670 this land was called Massacoh. Its first settlers moved up from Windsor because they wanted land of their own and jobs in the pitch and tar works. Those works depended on the thick pine woods that once covered the area, and the settlement that grew around them took the name Simsbury.
- Thomas Barber's firstsThomas Barber, son of Thomas Barber of Windsor, was one of the original patentees of Simsbury. He built the town's first meeting house, its first church and its first gristmill. The meeting house has since disappeared, and Barber lies in the Hopmeadow Cemetery, close to the spot where it once stood.
- Eno Memorial Hall, 1932Amos Eno was born in Simsbury and later made a fortune in real estate and banking in New York City, where his daughter Antoinette was born. As Antoinette Eno Wood she spent her summers back in Simsbury, and the town greeted her with a reception on Independence Day each year. Her will paid to design and build Eno Memorial Hall in honor of her parents, and the hall was completed and dedicated in May 1932.
