About Salmon Brook, Connecticut
Salmon Brook is the census name for the village of Granby, the main settlement of the town of Granby in Hartford County, and it counted 2,428 people in 2020. The village stands mostly on a flat terrace about 50 feet above two stream valleys. Salmon Brook runs east of the village on its way south to the Farmington River, and the brook's West Branch passes to the south.
Granby's first settlers built their homes along Salmon Brook Street, which became a well-traveled road through the town. Traffic on that road helped early tradesmen do well, and two of the houses from that first century still stand together today, kept by a local historical society that took the brook's name.
- A blacksmith's house, about 1750Abijah Rowe worked as a blacksmith and also farmed, and his spot beside the busy road through Granby helped him prosper. His house went up on the east side of Salmon Brook Street around 1750. In 1966 Carolyn Colton Avery and Mildred Colton Allison handed the house over to the Salmon Brook Historical Society, which restored it and opened it to visitors.
- A farmhouse moved seven milesThe Moses Weed House, believed to date from around 1780, shows how a typical tenant farmer of the 18th century lived. When it faced demolition, the historical society moved it seven miles east of where it first stood and attached it to the back of the Rowe House. The pair is now listed on the National Register as the Rowe and Weed Houses.
- Four buildings, one planDuring the 1910s, Granby joined with its South Congregational Church to build a group of four buildings on Salmon Brook Street South, in the center of town. Together they put up a Georgian Revival community house, a church, a hipped-roof schoolhouse and a gambrel-roofed library. People at the time pointed to the project as a fine model of a town and a church planning together.
