About Tariffville, Connecticut
The first carpet factory in Connecticut opened at Tariffville in 1827. It was built because early laws had set protective tariffs. After 1867, sorting and packing tobacco replaced manufacturing as the village's chief industry.
By June 1867, the large mill in Tariffville had been destroyed by fire. Many local Baptists had worked in its carpet factories. The factories were never rebuilt in the village. They moved to Thompsonville instead.
- The village churchIn the 1840s, a movement for a new parish grew in Tariffville. Trinity Church was organized there in 1848. By then the village had become the industrial center of the region. Its brownstone church building went up in 1874.
