About Tolleson, Arizona

Tolleson is a city of 7,216 people in Maricopa County, on the west side of the Phoenix area. In 1910 Walter G. Tolleson came here with his wife, Alethea H. Tolleson, and the couple bought a 160-acre ranch at 91st Avenue and Van Buren Street. There he reopened the old Ten Mile Store, which had been the first stage stop and general store for travelers heading from Phoenix to Yuma.

In 1912 the couple split the ranch into lots for sale. To draw farmers, Walter chartered a train, gave everyone who rode it a free lunch and handed out five dollars in gold, and eighty lots sold for $50 each. His brother Leon became the first postmaster in 1913, and the town incorporated in 1929 under its founders' name.

  • Vegetable Center of the WorldFarming around Tolleson grew fast during the 1940s. By the 1950s the town had earned a proud nickname: "Vegetable Center of the World." The boom faded in the early 1960s, when new machinery on local farms meant far fewer workers were needed.
  • From one square mile to sixDuring the late 1970s "range war," Avondale, Goodyear and Phoenix raced to annex land along the planned route of Interstate 10. Tolleson's area went from a single square mile to six, but its neighbors had more money to spend. Phoenix bought two narrow strips of land separating Tolleson from Avondale, one thirty feet wide and the other fifty, just to keep Tolleson from spreading.
  • More than 20,000 jobsFry's Food and Drug and Albertson's opened distribution centers here in the 1980s, and other companies followed, drawn by fast access to Phoenix and California by way of Interstate 10, State Route 85 and the Union Pacific Railroad. Today the city of just over 7,000 people hosts more than twenty Fortune 500 companies and over 20,000 jobs.
  • A high school since 1927Tolleson Union High School opened in 1927 and is the oldest of six schools in its district. Merle Keagle, class of 1941, played center field for the Chicks of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, 1944 to 1948. Bob Stump, class of 1947, farmed cotton and grain here, went to Congress from 1977 to 2003 and came home most weekends to work his farm.
