About Terryville, Connecticut

Terryville is a village of 5,202 people in Litchfield County, and it is the largest village in the town of Plymouth. It carries the name of Eli Terry Jr., whose father was the pioneer clockmaker Eli Terry Sr.

In 1824 the younger Terry opened his own clock factory on the Pequabuck River, at a spot where the river dropped far enough to power his machinery. He put up many houses for the people who worked for him and gave generously toward a Congregational church, and the settlement around his factory came to bear his name.

  • From clocks to locksIn 1833 Eli Terry Jr. reached beyond clockmaking and brought Stephen G. Bucknall, a lockmaker from England, to the village. Locks became Terryville's living. By 1900 the Eagle Lock Company had 1,000 people on its payroll, and the village had grown into a busy factory town. Today Terryville is home to the Lock Museum of America.
  • The Terryville WaterwheelA wooden waterwheel in downtown Terryville marks the site of Terry's upper factory, which turned out clocks until 1846. Only three wooden waterwheels from the 19th century are known to survive in Connecticut, and this one has come down to us more complete than the other two. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Built on the PequabuckThe Pequabuck River, a branch of the Farmington River, runs west to east through the middle of Terryville. Its steep fall here is what drew Terry to build his factory on its bank in 1824.
