How a town becomes a print.
The old-atlas feeling comes last. The place has to be right first.
The survey
We start with current public survey and elevation data for the town and its border, then draw the roads, the buildings, the water and the terrain at a scale where a single house is still visible.
The research
Then the slow part. Someone reads the town's own record to decide what belongs on the map: the landmarks a resident would name, the historic districts, the founding year. A place is only lettered once we can source it.
The engraving
The finished map is set in the style of a nineteenth century New England atlas, with the title panel, the lettering, and the muted inks of a plate that has been on a wall for a long time.
The print itself
Made for a wall, not a drawer.
A map worth looking at twice should be printed like one. Every order is made on heavyweight archival matte paper with fade resistant inks, then either rolled in a crush resistant tube or delivered framed and ready to hang.

Is my town really on here?
All 169 Connecticut towns and cities have their own map, plus Storrs, which is a village of Mansfield rather than a town of its own. Andover, Union, Scotland, Hartland and Voluntown are drawn with the same care as Hartford and New Haven.
Is this a historic map or a current one?
Current. The streets and buildings are drawn from present day survey data, so what you see is the town as it stands now. What is historic is the style: the shading, the lettering and the engraved title panel follow the conventions of a nineteenth century New England atlas.
How are the landmarks chosen?
Town by town, by hand. The rule is what a resident would name if asked what is in their town. Nothing is lettered on the map unless it can be sourced.
Which size should I choose?
The 12" x 18" suits a hallway, an office or a gallery wall. The 18" x 24" is the most popular and reads comfortably from a few feet away. The 24" x 36" is the statement size.
What is the frame like?
A slim Ayous wood frame in black or white, with lightweight shatterproof acrylic instead of glass. It arrives fully assembled with hanging hardware.
How long does it take to arrive?
Most orders ship within 3 to 5 business days and arrive within 7 to 10 business days total, with free U.S. shipping. If you need it by a particular date, write to us first and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done.
What if something is wrong with it?
If a print arrives damaged or defective, email us and a replacement goes out. No fine print and no argument. KNOWOL has shipped more than 10,000 map orders and the delivery part is the part we have made easy.
